We began working with wood with our father a master carpenter way back in l970 doing local kitchens and bathrooms. We did this so that would help put ourselves thru college. Well now still in business for over near 35 years! From this we went into custom wood working and other area of woodworking. For example; we moved into special export crating as a sideline this turned into a whole business of its own.

Then my brother Charlie began making wood mantles, old looking wooden shelves, reclaimed wooden benches, wooden old looking tables and other old barnwood looking furniture pieces. His finishes are natural, stained, pickled, painted, waxed, varnished or you idea. Our ideas have changed slightly over the years. We try to stay on top of what is happening and the growing trends of wood in the wooden rustic furniture ann primitive table world.

At the present we create wooden distressed furniture and other wooden home decor.All from up-cycled wood. We now use only recycled wood for all our wood furniture. No new trees are cut down for our reclaimed wooden rustic primitive tables, wood benches and unique barn wood recyled furniture.

People ask what inspired you to open a business at such a young age?

We opened back in 70’s.

The economy was terrible we could not find work so, we made our own work. We tried to create a custom wood working business at that time where other local craftsmen and customers would love see our new unique furniture ideas. We have not stopped since. In 2000 we started trying and using only reclaimed upcycled wood for our one of a kind wooden furniture shop. We were not sure if this recycled lumber would go over; well this has opened a whole new door for us! The wedding farm table rental furniture keeps us busy all year long. Many brides and event planners rent long wooden country farm tables from us.

How long have you been doing rustic upcycled wood furniture?

We had been in new wooden furniture since 1980’s. We started out with a couple of small pieces for family and friends at first and then moved on to the large ones that bring in thousands of customers. For the past 11 years since 2000 we have been doing this reclaimed reused wood, it is enough to keep us busy all year long. We like doing 1 table for a week for an individual or 100 tables for a month for a restaurant and take a day or two break. This way we have time to rethink our ideas for each customer. For the past 11 years we have been doing custom pieces from picture it is a real challenge but enjoy every minute of it! What do you like most or least about doing woodworking? Setting up the sizes and measurements is the worst, we make everything custom size. But when everything in between makes it all worthwhile! We love chatting with customers and hearing the nice compliments of our handmade custom work. There is nothing better than to have customers purchasing your handmade items with a smile on their face.

What advice would you give others who are thinking about starting a business? It doesn’t happen overnight! Be patient and start creating what you know about and love. Our wooden tables are still made from old wood and have not lost there natural patina which gives it that old look . So, we do not distress them to regain . Once the wood has been planed or heavily sanded it gains it own old look.

Our tables have a wonderful character, the old patina from all those years is easy to see. The wood boards, beams and timbers are carefully selected when you purchase our furniture. Then we built to your specifications, which is according to your likes. A lot of reproduction table makers use vintage beams from old industrial buildings, which are then re-sawn, back into lumber for tables, which is nice, but not the same as we do with full size pieces for you wood table, benches and chairs. In our rustic creations we use a local resource from our Philadelphia History. Antique lumber from reclaimed from old rowhomes, old houses, industrial buildings. We have bought storm damaged reclaimed native trees. Some of the Rowhome wood has quite an interesting story as well as a unique character making for some unique looking wood furniture. In our country antique ancient old wooden buildings are fast disappearing all across the USA. They are being buried in landfills or burned up in smoke. We try to preserve some of that heritage in each piece we create by recycling as much as we can of the antique buildings their implements and making wooden furniture. The natural aging, nail holes and knots in the weathered wood accentuate the beauty of our creations. Not one board or plank is the same, each one has a unique and distinct character. So, with that long list images and photos that she liked, she said “don’t you just love the details and knots in the tables that are very rustic.” She said they were so excited for this idea and the possibilities that they knew we weren’t going to be able to “rent” most of the items for the wedding. We thought that we would need to find someone to “build” what we needed. But we found you. In doing our design and keeping brides images and pictures we knew that we wanted to rent WOODEN FAMILY STYLE TABLES! So, in our search for these tables, we quickly came to the realization that – 1) there were no farm table rentals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland , New York or the surrounding states that were available for rent – 2) Most bride’s budgets wouldn’t allow for purchasing brand new dining room tables that we envisioned – 3) The bride would have no use or place for all these tables after the wedding. Our Hand-crafted old looking rustic wooden Farm Tables are available for rent or purchase.

Our hand-crafted wooden Farm Tables measure approximately 97 x 41 inches and seat up to 10 guests. Designed to be used bare or with a runner, these tables are perfect for the wine country wedding, family style meal, communal dining, garden parties, beach weddings and coastal dinner. They look amazing as buffet, escort card, gift, or guest tables. Each unique table is 100% reclaimed wood ,antique looking pine and mixed hardwood with rough brushed varnish lines finish to compliment a wide range of accents.

When we originally started building to rent the wood tables, we thought they would be great for buffet displays and dessert bars (and they have made for some amazing buffet displays), we never knew how amazing they could look as communal guest dining tables.

Another bonus with these tables is that there is no need to use a linen tablecloth or long. Although, one bride used of our beautiful tables with a line runners it did make a nice addition, for the setting, she simply laid decorative white material down the length of the table underneath the place settings.

Reclaimed Wood and other materials are worthy of a second look.

Even with surging interest in green building and sustainability, new construction and renovation projects continue to deplete vast quantities of resources. Remodeling, Demo in particular, is a double-edged sword–the new buildings consumes materials, the demolition of the old structure generates debris.

You can build efficiently with sustainable products, and many pros do, but reusing building materials salvaged from old structures is yet another way to help Mother Earth. The concept is simple: The tons of usable materials that already exist in commercial and residential applications can be carefully deconstructed, cleaned up, and reused in new buildings.

Recycling in this manner is an old tradition, but the practice has grown as an increasing number of builders and architects consider it the ultimate sustainability strategy. Using something old is often easier on the environment than buying new.

Atlas Wood Products/Nick Sucic jr. has long advocated the reuse of building materials. We feel the built environment already has many usable materials and sees no reason to fill up our vanishing landfills with perfectly good materials. With new architects, remodelers, and builders in the eco game. Many are now scoping out sources for materials for a renovation or restoration project instead using them in new material.

Good As New
Salvaged lumber is one of the most popular reuse categories for recycling at Atlas Wood Products. In many cases, the materials in old buildings are of far better quality than new materials. The reason is Old buildings were often built with slow-growing first-growth timber, which is denser and more stable than new, fast-growing second-growth or plantation timber. This year is the first time that Atlas Wood Products sells 70 percent of the wood as salvaged wood or reclaimed lumber. Our Reclaimed products included many species, dimensional wood framing lumber and heavy beams.

Lumber is just one of many salvaged materials available for reuse. Bathtubs, chalkboards, sinks, cabinets, mantels, shutters, stairs, and tile also can be reclaimed. For example, people now rebuild used old plumbing fixtures and rewire lamps. Most common items, such as dimensional lumber, timber, bricks, and stone, can also have value for a design firm. Plumbing fixtures–especially sinks–and finished hardware are also good choices, and lighting fixtures can be easily rewired and upgraded.”

If you start looking at used or salvaged materials your project can be designed around the type of reclaimed material.

Cost Considerations
Considering the world of new possibilities is good, but the process of using salvaged materials in new ways requires builders, remodelers, and architects to think differently. Material availability, sizes, and codes all play a role. For one thing, the salvage yard is not like a typical materials supplier; sometimes no two pieces are alike.

Our inventory is constantly changing. If you stop by enough, you’ll get good stuff, but it depends on being in the right place at the right time.

Sometimes just being there isn’t enough. Being high bid, Staging Material and Cost Planning ahead is key to using salvaged components.

Standard dimensions change over time.” In most cases, you’ll have to figure out how to design without a specific product and yet, design for it. You may even have to buy the salvaged products first and then fit them into a design program later. There are options in reusing material, For example Used radiators can be great with hydronic heat. Cost is another consideration but that is depending on what look you want.

With reclaimed or salvage material you will have a unique look to your project. There are limitations to the old-is-better-than-new rule. If you have antique barn timbers shipped from southern Texas to your construction site in Maine, you’re using a lot of energy getting them from there to here timbers. It makes more sense to find your material with in your own area. Reuse is always good for the environment, so maybe not your whole project will reclaimed material but a portion.

Over One-hundred countries have signed onto an International Plant Protection Convention IPPC, ISPM15 agreement that creates a uniform system to control pests in wood packaging material (WPM) – both hardwood and softwood – used in international trade. The standard is called International Standard for Phytosanitary Measure 15 or more commonly “ISPM 15.” Under ISPM 15, all WPM (such as pallets, crates, boxes, and dunnage used inside ocean containers) must be ,

• Heat treated to a minimum wood core temperature of 56ºC for a minimum of 30 minutes. This is Atlas Wood Products method.

IPPC Stamped or Certified Lumber

Atlas Wood Products has received several inquiries regarding the purchase of IPPC stamped or certified lumber.

The IPPC stamp can only be used on completed wood packaging or Knocked Down Crate Kit by any IPPC ISPM 15# wood packaging manufacturer. In addition, wood packaging purchased in retail lumber yards using HT stamped wood does not meet the ISPM 15 IPPC requirement. The finished wood packaging, crate, pallet, wooden skid must have an official IPPC stamp on the opposing sides that’s licensed to that wood packaging manufacturing facility.

ALL WOOD USED FOR EXPORT PACKING MUST BE STAMPED COMPLIANT TO THE IPPC ISPM 15 STANDARD.

Definition of Dunnage
We have received several inquiries regarding dunnage.
Dunnage is defined as “wood packaging materials used to secure or support a commodity, but which does not remain associated with the commodity.”

Dunnage Confusion
This definition has been the source of much confusion. To try to resolve the confusion, we spoke to our www.NELMA.org inspector. .

Dunnage Decision
Atlas can provide its customers with IPPC Dunnage stamped lumber to be used outside of a commodity such as blocking and bracing in an ocean container. However, dunnage stamped lumber may be used to block and brace inside of a crate, on a pallet or skid. If you need additional lumber to be used inside of a crate or on a skid, we will provide you with this blocking as part of that crate or skid order. The lumber will be Dunnage IPPC stamped,.We apologize for any difficulties this may cause. It’s our goal to make sure your product arrives to its final destination on time, safely and securely

We work with recycled lumber, which needs to be conditioned for furniture use. Each piece of lumber is unique and has its own set of characteristics. Our furniture is crafted by hand, in Philadelphia, Pa. USA. So some variations in size and finish are to be expected. To reduce waste, we always try to build with what we have at hand, so there may be slight variation from one piece to the next. Please note that knots, cracks and imperfections within the piece are part of the charm of purchasing furniture made with recycled materials and are to be expected. Pieces can be made to custom dimensions. Dining tables can be purchased alone.

Our originals are handcrafted in small batches from waste, reclaimed or rescued construction lumber. Our stains and finishes are hand-applied, rendering each finished piece an exquisite individual. Nick Sucic Sr. has been designing buildings and furniture since 1948. He has experimented with many different building technique and materials. In 2004 he started designing and building exclusively using recycled/waste construction lumber. This type of lumber is a difficult material to work with, but in his view these were usable pieces that were being too easily discarded. We have worked with graphic Design Artists and Interior Design people. We have worked as a designers for a variety of clients ranging to local offices and restaurants . We are working on extending the line as well as designing a new line using recycled lumber and wood metal architectural objects.

Our ever expanding portfolio of furniture designs can be right sized or tweaked just for you.

Most of the material we use will be from recycled and reclaimed wood. The handmade nature and high craftsmanship is obvious in every piece we produce.

Our finish quality is well above the industry norm.

Materials from decommissioned buildings and industrial sites come to us, before they go home to you.

So, You finally nailed down your spot, and now you are thinking about how to outfit the venue.

Of course it’s in a garden or rustic farm setting of sorts, and you are thinking to keep it simple.

You would like to have the ceremony and reception all in one location.

You could always just rent plastic tables and plastic chairs but that would look chessey.

Are you thinking wooden picnic tables and benches still chessey?

Your problem: You can not find a place to rent nice clean wooden picnic tables!

You have seen those ugly plastic ones many times

But, your still thinking upscale rustic wooden farm table for rent.

It would fit perfectly with everything else your doing.

For as long as we have been making tables, we always could not decide between long table or round tables.

Personal I like them both, but their both different.

I like the family style eating associated with round farm table.
